On July 24, 2025, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for more than 634,000 Frigidaire-branded minifridges. The CPSC recall notice indicates that the minifridges’ “electrical components can short circuit and ignite the surrounding plastic housing, posing fire and burn hazards.” According to the CPSC recall notice, there have been at least 26 reports of the minifridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating and catching fire, causing personal injuries and property damage. The CPSC recall notice advises that consumers “should unplug and cut the power cord and write ‘Recall’ using a permanent marker on the front door of the unit.”
The minifridges were manufactured by ShangYu North Electron Manufacture Co. Ltd., of China and imported by Curtis International Ltd., of Canada. “Frigidaire” is printed on the front of the units, which were sold in a variety of colors, including black, blue, green, white, yellow, red, pink and silver. The minifridges were sold through retailers and online retailers, including Walmart and Amazon, from January 2020 through December 2023. The model numbers of the affected units are: EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149 and EFMIS175.
